Moorland Management for Wading Birds

Waders are declining in Scotland for a number of reasons, but it’s generally accepted that consistently poor productivity has led to a situation in which not enough chicks are being reared into adulthood each year. Habitat management and predator management can tip the balance back in favour of wading birds in the uplands, but in order to be successful, both must be implemented at a landscape scale.

This guide:

  • Explains where and how wading birds are threatened.

  • Describes the basic habitat requirements for wader conservation.

  • Discusses the role of predator and landscape management in successful wader conservation.
